BLACK LIVES MATTER
Of the 7,666 times that police officers killed people in the US between 2013 - 2019, only 25 (0.3%) resulted in a conviction, 74 (1%) resulted in a charge but no conviction, and a whopping 7,567 (98.7%) resulted in no charges whatever. Black people were 24% of those killed by police despite being only 13% of the American population. There were only 27 days in 2019 when police did NOT kill anyone. George Floyd, a 46 year old father of a 6 year old daughter, was murdered on May 25th, 2020 by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on Mr. Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes, despite his cries of "I can't breathe!". A grocery store employee called the police on Mr. Floyd because of an allegedly counterfeit (it wasn't) $20 bill he used to buy a pack of cigarettes. Moments later, and with a raised gun, MPD Officer Thomas Lane approached the car in which George Floyd was sitting around the corner from the grocery store. Officer Lane pulled Mr. Floyd from the vehicle & handcuffed him. While several cops attempted forcing Mr. Floyd into the squad car, he fell to the ground. Then, Officer Chauvin placed his left knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for an entire 8 minutes & 46 seconds, despite Mr. Floyd becoming clearly non-responsive after about 6 minutes. As of June 5th, after international outcry, Officer Chauvin has been arrested & charged with second degree murder, while the other 3 officers at the scene have been charged with aiding & abetting. However, this is not enough, and only even came about due to public pressure. Minneapolis PD & all police brutality must be held accountable!

Breonna Taylor was a 26 year old award-winning emergency room technician who was bravely serving on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after midnight on March 13th, 2020, as Breonna & her boyfriend Kenny Walker were asleep in their bed, three Louisville police officers in plain clothes used a battering ram to crash open her apartment door without identifying themselves while executing a no-knock warrant. The police were allegedly searching for a suspect who was in fact already in police custody. Kenny Walker, who was licensed to carry a gun, fired one shot in self-defense at the intruders while also calling 911 to report that his home was being broken into. The police fired multiple shots, hitting Breonna Taylor at least 8 times, and even striking the adjoining apartments. The police then arrested Mr. Walker for the attempted murder of a police officer (his one shot in the dark hit the leg of one of the police intruders). The charge against Mr. Walker was dropped two months later after public outcry. The three murderers, Officers John Mattingly, Brett Hankison & Myles Cosgrove, have been placed on administrative reassignment, but that is clearly not enough - we must demand that they are immediately terminated and charged with the murder of Breonna Taylor!

Ahmaud Arbery, a 25 year old who loved football & had a full life ahead of him, was brutally murdered in the middle of the street by white supremacists on February 23rd, 2020. He was out for a jog in Brunswick, Georgia, when a racist father & son, George & Travis McMichael, began following him in their pickup truck. A racist friend of theirs, William Bryan, also joined in & recorded the murder with his own cell phone. The three followed Ahmaud for several minutes, even once knocking him down with their vehicle until they succeeded in boxing him in to prevent his escape. Then Travis McMichael shot Ahmaud 3 times with his shotgun. As Travis stood over Ahmaud's body in the street, he uttered a racial slur. All three murderers were finally arrested & charged on May 7th after national outcry, however it is obvious that they should also be charged with a hate crime!

Tony McDade was a 38 year old Black trans-masculine person who was shot & killed by police in Tallahassee, Florida on May 27th, 2020, just two days after George Floyd. The circumstances around McDade's death are still unknown due to TPD invoking a Florida law that protects police shooters as victims. However, an eyewitness says they never heard the white police officer identify themselves to McDade, that the police just started shooting. According to the Human Rights Campaign, Tony McDade is believed to be the 12th transgender or gender nonconforming person violently killed in the US in 2020. The American Medical Association deemed the murder of transgender people an "epidemic". In Florida alone, seven black transgender women have been murdered just in the last two years. In the last 3 months, Tallahassee police have fatally shot 3 people, all Black. Black TRANS Lives matter too!

DEFUND THE POLICE
The US spends over $100 billion ANNUALLY on policing, plus another $80 billion on jails. It would cost about $20 billion to eliminate homelessness in the United States. It would cost around $34 billion to provide free college education to every American. Read more about defunding the police here and here.
