Vendor Spotlight: Plaine Products

Plaine Products is a line of vegan personal care products with a mission. Their line of products consists of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion all packaged in refillable containers.

Here at Hippie Haven, we love their products and their mission to reduce plastic in everyday items. We are honored to carry their products in our store.

Lindsey McCoy, CEO and cofounder of Plaine Products came up with the idea for the company in 2015. She was living in the Bahamas at the time and kept seeing plastic pollution everywhere. She began cutting down on her own plastic consumption but couldn’t find a solution to the bottles in her shower.

An idea formed and she decided to take action. She called her sister and asked if she wanted to go into business together. They worked on the product and design for 2 years before launching in 2017.

They started with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the rosemary mint vanilla scent. Since then they have grown to include body lotions. All products are now offered in either rosemary mint vanilla or citrus lavender.

Lindsey says they didn’t want to add to consumerism, they wanted to provide products that people need and will use. Their goal is to get rid of plastic bottles. Along the way, they learned about the chemicals in many of the conventional personal care products and they wanted to offer their customers clean beauty options.

How it works: You can buy Plaine Products from the Hippie Haven Shop or straight from the Plaine Products website. When the product is empty, return the bottle, grab a new one, and they will refill the one you returned.

Plaine Products was one of the first companies to start using reusable bottles for their products. Lindsey says figuring out how to make that work and explaining to potential customers how it works and why it is important has been one of the biggest challenges for their company.

A lot of thought went into their packaging. They decided on metal because they were concerned about glass being dropped and breaking in the shower. They tried stainless steel, but that rusted. Now their cans are made from aluminum with a lining inside the bottle.

Aluminum can be infinitely recycled into more aluminum. When they get products back that are too damaged to use, they recycle the packaging.

Lindsey says the most fun part of her job is getting to work with a group of amazing women. She adds their customers are amazing and inspirational.

“They support us, send us feedback, they are very kind and it means a lot,” Lindsey says.

Seeing the customers stand up for them and their company on social media means so much to them and helps keeps them motivated.

“I’m blown away with how much support we’ve got,” Lindsey says. “We have a really high return rate for the bottles, and people are excited to participate. The enthusiasm for this crazy idea I had in the shower has blown me away.”

Starting a business is a lot of work and can be scary. Lindsey says if they waited for everything to be perfect, they never would have launched.

“It’s never going to be perfect. You have to go for it anyway and fix it along the way. We have changed the bottles, the website, and how we talk about it. We are constantly changing things for the better.”

Lindsey says she really love the body lotions and rosemary mint shampoo. Her sister prefers the citrus lavender scent.

You’ll want to keep an eye out for their new products too. They are about to launch a hair repair oil and they are developing a sunscreen and hand sanitizer.
